Monica is a sponsor at Dorley Hall. Her most recent assignment was Diana. She has an athletic build (Raph likens her to a "lady boxer" [SD 41]) and "really long" black hair. [SD 26] Frankie describes her as "tall, energetic, and neurotic". [SD 40]
Monica has a room on the third floor of the Hall [SD 19] but is currently residing in a rented room at Chiamaka's B&B in Cherston-on-Sea. [SD 44]
Monica is an early riser, and according to Edy, wakes earlier than anyone else in the Hall. In the mornings, she prepares meals for other sponsors and works out in a makeshift gym in one of the rooms behind the dining hall. [SD 21] She also spars with Tabitha (and later, Leigh) for exercise and to blow off steam. [SD 34]
It is implied that Monica has some sort of training as a biologist and that she has a ("very") part-time job outside of the Hall. [SD 39] She is apparently able to pick locks. [SD 45]
Following Diana's return to the fold, her New Personal History establishes her as Monica's younger sister; Monica is intensely attached to her and is heavily invested in her well-being. She affectionately calls Diana "Lady Di". [SD 41]
Pre-transition
Monica recalls staying in a seaside B&B similar to Chiamaka's around the age of 7 or 8. [SD 41]
Personal history
Monica has changed her name twice since transition. [SD 19]
She has visited Australia at least twice, on each occasion spending six months working as a bartender, both before coming to Dorley and after graduation; she remarks that she found the contrast between the two experiences "endlessly fascinating". [SD 33]
Monica smoked cigarettes before joining her intake and returned to the habit when she was moved to the second floor in her third year in the programme, chain-smoking nearly twenty cigarettes a day. She then subsequently suffered deep vein thrombosis due to an interaction with her hormone therapy and had to be rushed to the hospital, she has since made a full recovery. Aunt Bea relates the story to Christine to deter her from smoking. [SD 8]
At the Christmas party, she beats everyone (save Tabitha, who declines) at arm-wrestling. [SD 33]
Monica becomes friendly with Isla during their time together in Cherston, and despite hints at a mutual attraction, is currently opting to keep their relationship professional in order to prioritize Diana's safety. [SD 44]
Sponsoring
Monica is an especially senior sponsor; she had the authority to (unwittingly) hire Karen[SD 12] and she is one of the few people at Dorley who definitely knows what happens to washouts.[SD 43] She is also tasked with filling in for many of Maria's duties when she is incapacitated, including administering the first disclosure to the members of the intake. [SD 17]
Monica was originally assigned to sponsor Leigh, but Tabitha successfully argued her case to sponsor her instead. [SD 33]
Diana's intake and washout
At intake, Diana is extremely oppositional to the programme and its sponsors and on many occasions Monica is required to step in and use brute force against her. Despite Monica's tough affect, the violence weighs on her conscience. [SD 13]
Following Diana's washout in November, Monica is tasked with other sponsor duties, including giving educational lectures with topics such as "What Is Feminism?" [SD 16] as well as supervising the status of all sponsors and subjects. [SD 17]
After Frankie arrives at the Hall following the escape from Stenordale Manor, Monica gradually assumes a role as her handler and intermediary between her and the rest of the Dorley organization. [SD 40] Monica is horrified to hear Frankie's report on Diana's experience at Stenordale and is distressed at the possibility that she might have been killed in the fire. [SD 37] Frankie observes that Monica had become intensely attached to Diana (or at least, "to the idea of her") in the time since her washout. [SD 39]
Diana's return
When Diana reaches out for help with her menopause symptoms after escaping Stenordale, Monica immediately leaps into action, grabbing injection supplies, making Christine authorize her for a thousand pounds out of the emergency fund, and driving with Frankie to Chelmsford to meet her at a café inside a John Lewis store. There, she attempts to persuade her to return to the Hall and offers her resources including an NPH, clothing, a stipend, and voice training. Ultimately, she cannot convince Diana to stay at Dorley, but gets her to agree to return for a visit. [SD 39]
Upon her return to the Hall, Monica helps Diana overcome her reluctance to enter the building and later administers her first estradiol injection. [SD 40] When Diana returns home to Cherston-on-Sea, Monica provides her with a bank account, emergency contact info for the Hall, and voice training resources, and works with her to establish an NPH and provide a passport and birth certificate. Diana picks the last name Rosamond and an NPH establishing her as Monica's younger sister. [SD 41]
After escorting Diana back home the Hall goes into lockdown; Monica chooses not to return to the Hall until the investigation at Stenordale is wrapped up and she can be sure that Diana is safe. [SD 43] She is currently residing in a rented room at Chiamaka's B&B in Cherston-on-Sea. [SD 44]
