Pre-transition
Jane compares herself before transition to a "blackhole of loneliness" and describes her past self as a "stubborn, stupid little boy. Too attached to a manhood that was all promises and no… no kindness.” [SD 32]
As a teenage boy, Jane was "thin like a reed and wore cheap glasses" and hung out with a group of rough boys she'd grown up with. Egged on by her friends, she sexually assaulted a woman on a train, only to later see her again and realize the true gravity of what she had done to her. Immersed in a toxic environment, Jane blamed the woman for her own guilty feelings and let the experience "poison" her, driving her down a path of anger and misognyny.
Eventually Jane arrived at Saints to study, where her behavior and online activity was noticed by Dorley Hall. [SD 35]
Relationships
Jane is in a serious relationship with Amy, whom she first met at the New Year's Eve party; they kissed at midnight and afterward Jane shared her backstory with hir. [SD 35] By the end of January, Jane refers to Amy as her partner, not her girlfriend. [SD 44] To hir chagrin, Jane can "reliably read Amy like zie’s a large-print children’s colouring book". [SD 45]
She appears to be on friendly terms with Monica and Tabitha, whom she often works closely with; Tabitha affectionately calls her Janey at times. [SD 19]
Sponsoring
Jane is a seasoned sponsor; Raph is the third boy she has been placed in charge of at Dorley Hall. However, Jane confides to Aunt Ashley that she is considering retiring after Raph graduates due to the emotional strain of seeing the effects that the Hall's kidnappings (and falsified deaths) have on the boys' families, but she is conflicted about leaving Aunt Bea short-staffed and potentially allowing dangerous men who could be "saved" to walk free. Jane complains at one point that she always gets the "difficult" boys and refers to Raph as a "fucking pillock". [SD 18] Towards the end of December, Pippa recognizes a specific gesture Raph makes and realizes that Jane's mannerisms are rubbing off on him. [SD 30] By Christmas Eve, Jane believes that Raph's progress in the programme is proceeding at the expected pace.[SD 31]
Jane is instrumental in helping convince Rachel to refrain from exposing Dorley Hall. [SD 35] In her excitement after confronting Rachel and getting to closer to Amy, she unintentionally shares part of her backstory with Raph, choosing to then fully reveal the truth of the programme to him.[SD 36] Jane has since explained the mechanics of orchiectomies, how to put on a bra, [SD 41] and tucking [SD 44] to Raph. After Raph begins gamifying his transition, Jane agrees to tally his score at the end of every week. [SD 44]
Jane is present when Ollie's suicide attempt is discovered and assists Frankie in stabilizing him, alongside Lisa. [SD 38]
Jane had two hundred quid on Diana being the only washout in the sponsor betting pool. [SD 19] She collects her winnings from Monica when Diana returns to Dorley Hall. [SD 40]
Jane is familiar with the literature and has jokingly contrasted it with the realties of operating Dorley Hall. [SD 30]
