This timeline is adapted and expanded from the detailed timeline created by Zoe Storm for the Novelty Mug Society Discord.

Before 2072, undated

  • John meets Emily for the first time in middle school.[K 30]
  • John returns from college to find his mother dead or dying.[K 42]
  • John and Emily begin dating, initially renting.[K 47]

2070s

  • 2072: John and Emily move into their house, nine years before the start of the book.[K 39]
  • Thursday 4 July 2076: the United States Tricentennial; John and Emily buy a celebration plate which will eventually end in up their closet.[K 4]
  • Around June 2077: The Kimmy android line is designed, fifty-three months before the start of the book.[K 37]
  • Around October–November 2078: Kim (Kimmy#5782) goes online, as she is three years old at the start of the book.[K 37]

2081

August to October 2081

  • Before or during September 2081 A malfunctioning Kimmy, previously known as Kay (Kimmy#2813), is delivered to John and Emily.[K 1] This occurs months before early November 2081, so late August at the earliest.[K 47]
  • September 2081: Kay is modified by Emily and John so Emily can fit into her; the process takes days.[K 1]
  • September or October 2081: Emily is run over by a car and taken to hospital: she needs to regenerate most of her legs and part of her side. The process is expected to take months.[K 2]
  • October 2081: Kay is further modified so John can fit into her; John starts slimming down.[K 3]
  • Mid-October 2081: John has slimmed enough to fit into Kay.[K 3] This is established as being two weeks before Halloween 2081.[K 2]
  • Friday 31 October 2081: Halloween party; John locked into Kay; integration starts. [K 4] The Halloween party is on a Friday, after the Tricentennial, meaning the year is 2081; the next two possibilities, 2087 and 2092, are too late for John and Emily to have been already moved into their house by the time of the Tricentennial.

November 2081

  • Saturday 1 November 2081: John brings Emily back home at around three in the morning;[K 9] when they wake John is able to connect to the Kimmy network,[K 10] and meets #0631;[K 12] John and Emily discover John is locked into Kay’s shell;[K 11] Emily is called into work;[K 11] John logs onto the network,[K 12] meets Kim; talking to Kim, John becomes aware of the seriousness of the situation,[K 13] writes an email to Patrick to ask for his help;[K 15] Emily comes home late;[K 16] John resolves to go to hospital without telling Emily to avoid worrying her;[K 18] Kay and Emily have sex for the first time;[K 17] John finds he cannot disobey a direct command;[K 18] Emily unwittingly puts John to sleep.[K 18]
  • Sunday 2 November 2081: During the night, John once again resolves to go to hospital first thing in the morning;[K 19] Emily goes into work again, leaving John asleep;[K 20] Patrick visits, establishes himself as superuser, renumbers Kay to #12943, and sets the first round of restrictions;[K 20] John is fired from his job;[K 26] John logs onto the Kimmy network seeking help, meets Thirty (Kimmy#3430);[K 22] Emily comes home, John tells her Patrick visited, they fight about it, and Emily sends John to sleep downstairs.[K 26]
  • Monday 3 November 2081: Emily wakes up before 5 a.m. and goes looking for John;[K 27] she makes him promise everything is okay;[K 27] John drives Emily to work and goes home;[K 28] at this point, Kay is almost entirely within spec;[K 29] in the afternoon, Patrick visits and rapes John;[K 30] John logs into the network to seek help;[K 30] #0631 pushes John into Infinite Fun;[K 30] after Patrick leaves, John screams;[K 31] the police investigate and make a call;[K 32] John drives Emily back home, via the grocery store;[K 34] after dinner, Emily falls asleep;[K 36] John is integrated enough that he can talk to Kim in person;[K 38] they visit Infinite Fun together.[K 39]
  • Tuesday 4 November 2081: During the night, John accepts being Kay;[K 42] Kay drives Emily to work;[K 43] spends the day cleaning the house and making plans with Thirty;[K 44] drives Emily back home in the evening.
  • Wednesday 5 November 2081: Emily takes a day off;[K 45] Emily and Kay spend the day together,[K 46] going to visit their spot; Kay meets Corgi-Kimmy (Kimmy#4208) in person and they talk;[K 47] John’s eyes have been fully replaced.[K 50]
  • Thursday 6 November 2081: Kay drives Emily to work and goes back home;[K 50] Patrick visits,[K 51] sets the second round of restrictions;[K 52] Kay gets a full diagnostic read and sends the data to Thirty;[K 54] Patrick rapes Kay again;[K 53] Emily comes homes unexpectedly for lunch;[K 53] Patrick forces Kay to act cordial;[K 53] Emily and Kay spend the afternoon together;[K 53] by the evening, John’s brain is fully replaced by neural sponge.[K 55]
  • Friday 7 November 2081: Kay drives Emily to work and goes back home;[K 56] checks herself in the mirror and finds that all dimensions are within spec;[K 57] decides to ask Emily to start calling her Kay;[K 57] Patrick’s feedback loop kicks in, Kay’s batteries deplete;[K 57] Emily rushes back home, finds Kay unresponsive, calls Patrick;[K 58] Patrick gives her the run-around, bringing in a con man to make the story more believable;[K 60] Kay is reactivated as a standard Kimmy unit, with her consciousness locked in;[K 61] Emily takes all her sick and vacation days (three weeks).[K 67]
  • Saturday 8 November 2081: Patrick drops off a checklist of things for Emily to get Kimmy to perform, on the narrow chance John might one day be able to be recovered.[K 67]
  • Sunday 9 November 2081: Emily designates the home office as off-limits to Kay; this is the second day after Kay’s lock-in is imposed.[K 67]
  • Remainder of November 2081: Kay starts spending as much time as she can in the network;[K 67] Thirty starts working on freeing Kay;[K 67] someone from Emily’s office visits.[K 68]

December 2081

  • Monday 1 December 2081: Emily goes back to work;[K 68] Patrick visits to gloat and rape Kay;[K 69] Emily comes back home from work and seeks John out;[K 70] by this point, Emily is recovered enough to move around without the wheelchair, though with significant difficulty and pain.[K 70]
  • December 2081: Thirty, based on information Kay supplies, modifies Infinite Fun to be more controllable;[K 72] Emily starts talking to Kay to tell her about her day;[K 71] old friends start getting in touch with Emily;[K 71] Emily composes nine letters to tell someone about the situation, but ultimately doesn’t send them;[K 71] last time Patrick’s con man gets in touch.[K 73]
  • Friday 12 December 2081: Kimmy#12944 (carrier of the worm which Thirty hopes will help free Kay) goes online, one week before Kay learns about Thirty.[K 72]
  • Thursday 18 December 2081: Patrick is fired from his job, one week before Christmas.[K 74]
  • Friday 19 December 2081: Kim tells Kay about Thirty having been stolen by hackers; while Thirty, Blondie, and Seventy-Seventy work on the plan to free Kay, Kay and Kim visit Infinite Fun to go go-karting; by this point, Emily has talked with Kay six times, and Patrick has visited and raped Kay eleven times.[K 72]
  • Sunday 21 December 2081: Emily talks to Kay, tells her she received a message from “Patrick’s boss” saying “Making progress”; complains she doesn’t want to go to the company Christmas party, ultimately decides to go, tells Kay she misses John and to tell John she’s sorry; by this point, Emily is completely out of the wheelchair and can move around unassisted, though with a hint of a limp on bad days and occasional twinge of pain.[K 73]
  • Monday 22 December 2081: Kay does Emily’s make-up;[K 74] Emily goes to the company Christmas party, which is unusually held on a Monday, confirming the year being 2081;[K 74] Patrick visits, tells Kay he was fired and that he’s broke;[K 74] checks if Kay is safe to sell, but she isn’t;[K 74] rapes Kay;[K 75] this is the first time Kay is able to speak freely since she was rebooted.
  • Tuesday 23 December 2081: Emily comes home drunk from the Christmas party, tells Kay about how she wanted to kiss the new girl at work; Kay brings her to bed; Emily tells Kay she misses John, and feels guilty because she thinks she killed him; she asks Kay to make love to her (which the control chip interprets as an order).[K 76]

2082

January to April 2082

  • Emily starts going out and getting drunk; has sex with Kay a few times; mostly stops talking to Kay. Patrick visits and rapes Kay many times, sometimes every other day; Kay spends as little time as possible out of the network, visits Infinite Fun with Kim often; they show each other their memories.[K 77]
  • Thursday 16 April 2082: Emily brings June home and they have sex;[K 78] Kay retreats into the network, visits Infinite Fun with Kim;[K 79] Kim shows her the first time Kay logged into the network; Kay decides to move on, kisses Kim; Kay and Kim start officially dating.[K 79]

April to August 2082

  • After 16 April 2082: Emily starts bringing dates home; she buys a gun and has a safe installed, “in case someone broke in or one of her hookups turned nasty.”[K 83]
  • Before mid-July 2082: Seventy-Seventy goes offline for good, at least fifty days before the sixth attempt to free Kay.[K 82]
  • Between 16 April and August 2082: Emily is promoted at work; Patrick finds a new job and a new apartment, continues to visit, continues to deteriorate.[K 81]
  • Before August 2082: Kay checks on John’s body for the last time, months before John’s body dies, which happens by September at the latest.[K 81]
  • August 2082: Kay suspects Emily thinks John is dead.[K 81]

September to December 2082

  • September 2082: Kay is certain Emily thinks John is dead; by this point, Kay’s human body has died and been recycled,[K 81] and Thirty has made six attempts to free Kay from the control chip.[K 82]
  • After 14 November 2082: Emily discovers Patrick raping Kay and throws him out; has Kay (uselessly) secure the house; tells Kay she’s sorry, but she has to move on; sends Kay to her cradle, and goes to sleep in the guest bedroom.[K 83] Kay fully moves on, too, finding a new song with Kim.[K 85] At least seven months have elapsed since Emily bought the gun.
  • After 18 November 2082: Emily reactivates Kay and swaps the designation of the primary and guest bedrooms.[K 86] Emily stops dating and throws herself into work, going in early and coming home late; starts fully treating Kay like a normal Kimmy, giving orders through voice commands rather than the app; Kay doesn’t leave the house any more, having groceries and other necessities delivered. The Kimmy line hits sales peak.[K 87]
  • Mid-December, before 25 December 2082: Emily goes to Canada to visit her cousin.[K 87]
  • Friday 25 December 2082: Kay throws a Christmas party in the Kimmy network.[K 87]
  • Saturday 26 December 2082: Patrick visits Kay (for the first time since he’s been thrown out of the house by Emily) and messes with her programming again, taking her offline; Kay starts deteriorating;[K 87] Kim sends the data she has from the event to Thirty;[K 101] Kay’s compulsion to eat and drink is removed.[K 87]

2083

January 2083

  • Saturday 9 January 2083: Kim, distraught that Kay is offline, stops visiting the network two weeks after Kay is taken offline;[K 102] starts ignoring messages from other Kimmys,[K 105] starts deteriorating.
  • Toward the end of January 2083: Emily notices Kay using the iPad to order groceries and asks her about it; doesn’t investigate when Kay replies “Network error”;[K 89] Patrick continues to rape Kay while Emily stops having sex with her.[K 92]

February 2083

  • Patrick continues to use Kay for sex.[K 92]

March 2083

  • Mid-March 2083: John’s official date of death.[K 159] This was retrospectively deemed to have occurred three months prior to Luiza arriving (see below at Mid-June 2083).
  • Before 27 March 2083: Corgi-Kimmy renames herself to Cardi.[K 107]
  • Saturday 27 March 2083: The Kimmys stage an intervention for Kim; Kim starts visiting the network again, eleven weeks after Kim stopped visiting the network.[K 106]

April 2083

  • Patrick continues to use Kay for sex;[K 95] Kay reflects that she is no longer a person, only a thing.[K 96]

May 2083

  • Saturday 29 May 2083: Thirty fries her inhibition cluster, comes out to the humans she lives with, starts working on freeing Kim.[K 114] This occurs ten days before Kim’s escape.

June 2083

  • Tuesday 8 June 2083: Thirty fries Kim’s inhibition cluster;[K 111] Kim escapes from the firehouse,[K 116] takes a long-haul bus,[K 118] meets Danielle,[K 119] and settles down for the night in a demo apartment.[K 120]
  • Wednesday 9 June 2083: Kim wakes up in the demo apartment, takes a long-haul train, spends the night aboard watching movies[K 121] and talking to Thirty.[K 122]
  • Thursday 10 June 2083: Kim arrives at the train station in the morning and walks to Kay and Emily’s house;[K 123] Kim finds Patrick raping Kay,[K 125] and kills him,[K 126] while Kay cannot remember who she is;[K 100] Kay is freed from Patrick’s restrictions and has her network connection restored,[K 127] starts healing herself[K 130]; Emily comes home, finds Kim,[K 129] and is told by Kim about everything that happened;[K 134][K 143] Emily and Kim move Patrick’s car.[K 145]
  • Friday 11 June 2083: Emily takes a day off from work, takes meds to “take off the edge”;[K 149] Kim takes care of her, further explains Patrick’s plan, and they bond over breakfast;[K 149] Emily sleeps the rest of the day off;[K 150] Patrick misses work.
  • Saturday 12 June 2083: Patrick is reported missing; police visits Kay and Emily’s house, looking for information about him; Kim pretends to be Kay, and she and Emily play innocent; Thirty alters record so Patrick is guilty of stealing from his employer; the police leave.[K 153]
  • Sunday 13 June 2083: Kay wakes up mid-morning; Kay and Kim kiss;[K 155] Kay and Emily have a heart-to-heart and realise they’re not together any longer.[K 156]
  • Around 15–16 June 2083: Almost a week Kim rescues Kay, the Kimmys throw Kay a Welcome Back party in the network.[K 158]
  • Mid-June 2083: Luiza arrives, explains the plan; she and Emily drive off together, leaving Kay and Kim at home: Kim pretends to be Emily’s Kimmy, and Kay pretends to be Emily, working from home. Kim and Kay have sex in person for the first time.[K 159] The date is presumably a few days to a week after Kay wakes up.
  • Late June 2083: Luiza and Emily return, having dumped Patrick’s body and gotten together while on the trip.[K 161] Again the date is undefined, but presumably several days after they left.

July to September 2083

  • Mid-July 2083: Emily tells Kay that she wants to sell the house and move upstate.[K 162] Again an undefined date, two weeks after Luiza and Emily return.
  • Late Summer or early Autumn 2083: Kay, Kim, Emily, and Luiza leave the house for good[K 163] and move upstate.[K 164] The final chapter is presumably late Summer or early Autumn because of the sunbathing scene, and also due to bureaucracy necessitating at least several weeks for the house to be sold.
