Part Four of Kimmy traces the next four days, Tuesday 4 to Friday 7 November 2081, during which Kimmy#12943’s assimilation and integration of John’s brain matter is completed, and Patrick installs further compulsions and protocols limiting Kimmy’s behaviour.

Chapter breakdown

Chapter 42

Overnight and alone, Kimmy thinks about her adaptability to dire situations—John’s mother’s sudden death as an example— realising that the possibility of a rescue before a week elapses is remote and knowing she will never be able to be human again beyond that point, but if she could eventually be freed from Patrick’s programmed compulsions, she might possibly be able to adapt to being a robot girl named Kay.

Chapter 43

Kimmy drives Emily to work, then goes grocery shopping and setting up recurring expenses for consumables. After completing chores and preparing a stock pot meal for the evening, Kimmy settles on her charger.

Chapter 44

Kimmy and Thirty have a long discussion on how she plans to liberate both her and all of the Kimmys, with the aid of comparison with the next Kimmy to be encreched, Kimmy#12944.

Chapter 45

After making breakfast for Emily, she reveals she has a day off and worries about John’s predicament; again Kimmy, now thinking of herself as Kay, is obliged to lie to her about John being dissolved. Kimmy asks her to forget about his situation so they can enjoy the day together.

Chapter 46

Emily and Kay spend intimate time talking. Emily asks her if she could behave like Kimmy in public, and take her for an outing to their favourite spot.

Chapter 47

At the beach shore, Kimmy and Emily enjoy their memories of previous visits to the bay. Kimmy chatters with a passing Kimmy#4208 who is walking a pack of eleven corgis. Emily nearly manages to unravel what really has happened to Kimmy but the moment passes.

Chapter 48

Emily takes selfies and then Kimmy helps her back to their car.

Chapter 49

They meet one of Emily’s colleagues—Arlene Kern—who warns her of a boring meeting scheduled for the next day.

Chapter 50

The next morning Kimmy is inspected by three of Emily’s colleagues when she drops her off at work, and Kimmy reflects on John’s human eyes having been replaced by the previous evening when they met Arlene.

Chapter 51

Patrick arrives and Kimmy pleads one last time for him to release John. He refuses, and hopes she’s scared; she is. Kimmy sends a message to Thirty to advise she’s terrified for what Patrick plans to do next. Patrick orders her upstairs.

Chapter 52

Kimmy does her best to record for Thirty all of Patrick’s actions as he prepares to reprogram her.

Chapter 53

After another rape, Kimmy has to obey her new compulsions as Emily arrives home to find Patrick there, who unveils the next part of the deception, that he is going to find someone to help extract John from within Kay.

Chapter 54

Thirty returns Kimmy’s message and they have a brief exchange. She is pleased that Kimmy managed to record everything perfectly for her. Kimmy returns to sleep.

Chapter 55

Kim also text chats with Kimmy, while Emily is sleeping. She brings the bad news that Thirty’s prediction of another week had been incorrect (as per the spoiler to chapter 41), and Kimmy has already passed the no-return point over the course of the day. Kimmy kills the connection.

Chapter 56

Kimmy drives Emily to work, and finds herself completely in spec as she drives home, her brain now entirely assimilated by neural sponge or as near as makes no difference. The only memory of Kay she retains is her love for Kim, which she imagines was probably her final memory.

Chapter 57

Kimmy spends the morning researching her new body and looking forward to a time when Emily can call her Kay. An interrupt suddenly catches her unawares and she falls immobile on the stairs. She has barely enough time to send a panicked message to Kim before she blacks out.
