The main protagonists of Kimmy are John and Emily Burroughs, who are a perfectly normal married couple living in near-future (2080s) suburban America. John’s twin brother Patrick Heiden works at the company that manufactures Kimmys, a current premium model of female domestic humanoid servants.
The novel has a small cast of characters, listed below by name in alphabetical order (if known).
- Arlene Kern: one of Emily’s coworkers at the trillion dollar company, who Emily isn’t keen on meeting outside of work hours.[K 49]
- Mr Bailey: John’s supervisor at his high school.
- Miss Bancroft: one of Danielle Forney’s teachers, who was replaced while on maternity leave by Millennium, and who set ‘Gone With the Wind’ by Margaret Mitchell as an English text to be read by her students.[K 119]
- Connie Melby: another team manager at Emily’s company, who takes an interest in Kay when she drops Emily off at work, assisting Emily with her wheelchair.[K 28]
- Danielle Forney: see main article
- Danielle is a thirteen-year old girl who meets Kim (Kimmy#5782) while she is travelling cross-country on her journey to rescue Kay.[K 119]
- The Director of Social Networks: a slightly-handsy older executive at Emily’s company, who John saves from choking on an olive at the Halloween party, by performing the Heimlich manoeuvre.[K 7] John’s reward is to be covered in spittle and to receive a grope on the bottom from the man’s roaming hands. John uses Kimmy’s email to send a warning to HR about his possibly indecent behaviour. Emily later confirms that the director has something of a reputation, and she is grateful she works in another building from him.[K 8]
- Emily Burroughs: see main article
- Emily is a mid-thirties team manager at a trillion dollar company married to John, and is the main bread-winner of the couple. She enjoys wearing elaborate costumes and work parties to enjoy some plausibly deniable mockery of her corporate superiors.[K 1]
- Emily’s un-named cousin: the closest of Emily’s far-flung relatives who Emily visits in Canada for Christmas 2082.[K 87] The cousin’s family one time gifted John and Emily a stained-glass mirror stored in the cupboard under the stairs.[K 4]
- John Burroughs: see main article
- John is a history teacher at a local high school married to Emily, and supports her in her giddy fascination with Halloween costumes.[K 1] He is the younger of fraternal twins, having been born as John Heiden six minutes after his brother Patrick.[K 53]
- June: is a young woman Emily has a short-lived affair with, after the point in time that Emily believes her husband is irretrievably comatose or dead. Emily brings her home with her on at least one occasion in April 2082, involving an unconsenting and blase Kay in their drunken lovemaking.[K 78]
- Luiza: see main article
- Luiza is one of the members of the grey hat hacking group based in Albania[K 108] that ‘liberated’ Thirty, stealing her from a delivery truck,[K 72] and disabled her location chip.[K 159] After Thirty frees herself from her inhibition cluster and reveals her nature to the hackers, Luiza travels from Europe to help Emily, Kay, and Kim deal with Patrick’s corpse. Emily and Luiza take a trip to the north-east, disposing of Patrick’s body in the Atlantic, and begin a relationship during the trip.[K 161] After Emily sells up her house, Luiza and Emily make a project of renovating a large, run-down new home somewhere upstate.[K 164]
- Mary Ferguson: a coworker at Kim’s fire station who is on leave when Kim makes her escape. Kim takes the majority of casual clothing left behind in Mary’s locker at the station for use as her disguise.[K 116]
- Patrick Heiden: see main article
- John Burrough’s elder twin, Patrick works at the company that manufactures Kimmys, and has an envious and hostile relationship with his brother, and jealously covets the cosy married life John enjoys with Emily. Patrick deliberately enforces John’s entrapment within Kay,[K 20] which leads to John’s mind being completely assimilated and his body being consumed, as part of a ham-fisted plan to bamboozle Emily[K 62] into transferring her sympathies to him. Emily eventually banishes Patrick from the house at gunpoint after discovering him having sex with Kay[K 83].
- Patrick continues to unwisely return to the house to meddle with Kay[K 87] and use her for sex, being discovered in the act by Kim who breaks his neck.[K 100] Patrick’s death is concealed from the authorities[K 153] and plans made to dispose of his corpse in the ocean.[K 159]
- The Police Officer: a surly, belligerent, and rather bored cop from the local precinct who visits the Burroughs household a couple of times with a (presumably male, or male-shaped) cop-android partner; first responding to a woman’s scream made by Kay and reported to the police by an elderly neighbour,[K 32] and many months later, following up a missing person report on Patrick Heiden by tracking his recent whereabouts.[K 153]
- Tiff Kinnard: a coworker at Kim’s fire station who is on leave when Kim makes her escape. Kim takes a pair of her sunglasses from her locker at the station to help disguise her antenna pips.[K 116]
- Tommy Ingram: supposedly a coworker of Patrick’s at the company that manufactures Kimmys,[K 60] who is expected to arrive to help assist after John’s apparent near-fatal seizure. ‘Tommy’ never shows up, as Patrick and Emily are visited by the Unnamed Older Man.
- The Unnamed Older Man: an older, rather haunted-looking con man working with Patrick, who pretends to be one of Patrick’s superiors who has discovered what has befallen John after his apparent seizure, one week since being entrapped within Kay.[K 60] He works with Patrick to bamboozle Emily,[K 61] suggesting that John needs to be kept in a comatose, unaware state, while he embarks on a research project to reverse the damage done to his brain. Emily receives a supposed update from him one month or so later, ‘Making progress,’[K 73], while in the meantime Patrick reveals to Kay that he is an out-of-state professional con artist that he paid to bring in for the act, believing Patrick had hired him in an attempt to scam Emily.[K 69]
