Part Three of Kimmy
Part Three of Kimmy traces a single day, Monday 3 November 2081, during which John undergoes a range of horrible experiences in the real world as well as revelatory experiences in a virtual reality occupied by other Kimmys. From chapter Thirty-seven onwards she thinks more of herself as Kimmy than John.
Chapter breakdown
Chapter 27
Emily comes downstairs and fails to realise that John’s answers to her questions about John’s welfare are compelled and untrue.
Chapter 28
John drives Emily to work, and meets one of her colleagues Connie Melby, who only wonders about the Kimmy’s awkward gait.
Chapter 29
At home, John ruminates about his dire situation until Patrick arrives just after midday.
Chapter 30
Patrick orders John to the bedroom and begins raping him. John flees to the network where Kimmy#0631 directs him to Infinite Fun Space, a virtual environment created by the Kimmys. The virtual space turns out to be a replica of his middle school, with a younger Emily clothed in the same outfit she wore when they first met.
Chapter 31
Patrick leaves, and John showers to remove his stench, which gives John another example of Kimmy having no pleasurable sensations apart from the compulsion to complete tasks. He screams at the futility of escaping and switches himself off.
Chapter 32
The house alerts John to the arrival of a police vehicle, dispatched to investigate reports of a woman screaming, and John invents a plausible excuse concerning the screeching of the wheelchair lift to tell the officer and his android.
Chapter 33
John considers options for cooking dinner or getting takeout before driving to collect Emily from work.
Chapter 34
John does grocery shopping with Emily’s credentials transferred across to Kimmy#12943.
Chapter 35
John cooks Emily dinner with aplomb, but is appalled to discover his human self—his ‘John-state’ he has to remind himself—cannot correctly parse any stimuli about the meal.
Chapter 36
After dinner, John makes a hot chocolate for Emily as a nightcap while she showers. He tucks her into bed and she falls asleep lying on his shoulder.
Chapter 37
Kim contacts Kimmy in text mode. She finds out what Patrick did to her and declares her intent to murder him. After discussing the life of Kimmys and how they are treated in the real world, Kimmy dives into virtual space again, creating a simulacrum of the Burroughs’ bedroom, overlapping other areas. Kim arrives, telling Kimmy this level of integration is not a good sign.
Chapter 38
Kim and Kimmy share the virtual space with a sleeping Emily. She entices Kimmy to leave the simulacrum of Emily and explore Infinite Fun Space with her.
Chapter 39
Kim and Kimmy enter Infinite Fun Space (after meeting #0631 again in passing). Initially dark, after transitioning to light the space is revealed to be the Burroughs’ home as it was when John and Emily moved in nine years before; Kimmy and Kim witness Emily and John arriving. Kimmy expresses her regret than John is currently dissolving within her, and she is powerless to prevent it.
Chapter 40
Kim and Kimmy decamp to the meadow, where Kim tells Kimmy about the meaning of Infinite Fun Space and the transience of Kimmy experience; the Kimmy who had named Infinite Fun from twentieth-century science-fiction, #0290, had permanently disappeared without warning from the meadow, presumably deactivated.
Chapter 41
Kim is called to attend a fire with her fire brigade, and she leaves Kimmy with instructions—from ‘Professor Kimmy’, also known as Kimmy#3430, or Thirty for short—on what to do should Patrick again try to reprogram her. However Kim does not hold out hope that any such action will be able to rescue John in time. Any attempt to liberate John will take longer than a week, the presumed time John has remaining. Spoiler: the week that John has remaining is in fact an overly optimistic prediction
