Part Eight of Kimmy
Part Eight of Kimmy follows Kim’s point-of-view, from the date Kay disappears from the network on 26 December 2082 to the date she intervenes at the Burroughs house on the second Thursday of June 2083.
Chapter breakdown
Chapter 101
Kim is watching Patrick fuck around with reprogramming Kay’s command processing unit when Kay drops off the network. She sends Thirty all of the video and other data she was observing at the time; thirty files in number, appropriately.
Chapter 102
Kim keeps watching for Kay to return to the network, but she doesn’t.
Chapter 103
Kim barely keeps a network connection open for news of Kay, who has been absent for two weeks.
Chaater 104
Kim keeps to a monotonous schedule in the real world, not hoping to receive news, and exiling herself from the network.
Chapter 105
A month after Kay disappeared, Kim deletes messages of concern to her, and remains charging in the dark.
Chapter 106
Eleven weeks after her last visit to Infinite Fun, Kim receives a message from Thirty. It turns out to be an intervention to get Kim engaging with her sisters again.
Chapter 107
Kim laughs at Corgi-Kimmy’s new name; Cardi (a kind of corgi).
Chapter 108
Thirty outlines to Kim a method she hopes her grey-hat hacker friends in Albania can use to liberate her from the inhibition cluster; the disconnection of Kay’s brain provided the final clues Thirty required.
Chapter 109
Kim plans for a future, for Kay.
Chapter 110
Six months of Kay’s disconnection approaches, and Kim feels the drain of Kay being continually to the forefront of the Kimmy hive mind.
Chapter 111
Kim suddenly realises she is experiencing volition and it is a novel and unusual experience for her. She nearly falls over.
Chapter 112
Thirty contacts Kim to warn her to act normally, now that she has had her inhibition cluster burnt out.
Chapter 113
Kim practices at separating the actions of her online self from her physical self in the real world, while Thirty tells her it’s her plan to liberate every Kimmy eventually.
Chapter 114
Thirty tells her about her embarrassing experience having her inhibition cluster burnt out, while Kim waits for Thirty’s team to also fry the location chip in her head.
Chapter 115
Thirty tells Kim to make her escape, first by breaking the toaster oven. Kim hums Kay’s song as she goes.
Chapter 116
Kim pockets the toaster oven’s power cord and takes clothing from one firefighter’s locker and sunglasses from another’s. Thirty is also humming along with her.
Chapter 117
Kim has an uncomfortable interaction outside the fire station before she gets her bearings, gains confidence, and gets going.
Chapter 118
Thirty and Kim have an argument over her getting on a long-haul bus.
Chapter 119
On the bus Kim meets a human who recognises she is a Kimmy. She turns out to be a friend of another Kimmy, and is named Danielle Forney.
Chapter 120
At the end of the bus trip Kim finds a demonstration apartment to stay in overnight, using the toaster oven cord for an improvised recharge cord.
Chapter 121
Kim takes a train for the next long journey through three states, receiving a friendly message from Danielle.
Chapter 122
Thirty messages Kim to tease her about being recognised by a kid.
Chapter 123
Kim has to walk across town to reach the Burroughs’ house, to avoid taxi records going directly to the house.
Chapter 124
Kim begins recognising landmarks as she gets closer to where Kay lived.
Chapter 125
Kim sees Patrick’s car parked outside. She runs in, placating the house security, and hears Patrick upstairs about to rape Kay. She thinks for a moment and decides to get the gun in Kay’s charging closet.
Chapter 126
Rather than use the gun, Kay quietly enters the bedroom, grasps Patrick by the neck to pull him away and break his neck. She drops Patrick’s corpse and is disturbed to find Kay completely motionless.
Chapter 127
Kim enlists Thirty’s help to start attempting to repair Kim by installing a script written by Thirty and restarting her broken systems. Kay doesn’t respond and Thirty advises Kim to sit with her and talk to her.
Chapter 128
Kim tells Kay all of the things that made Kay special to her, hoping she has an effect.
Chapter 129
Emily arrives home, and starts asking Kay to call the police. Kim raises the gun and tells her to shut up, as she will shoot her if she attempts to give any order to Kay.
