Part Ten of Kimmy begins later on the afternoon of the second Thursday in June, 2083, and skipping though to the late summer or early autumn of the final chapter, again alternating between Kay’s and Kim’s points-of-view.

Chapter breakdown

Kay’s point-of-view

Chapter 142

Kay gets to a point of assimilating enough of Kim’s memories to understand who she is, who Kim and Emily are, and to attempt to recover some sort of sense to her own fragmented memories. She messages Kim to let her know she is able to begin her self-healing, and then withdraws.

Kim’s point-of-view

Chapter 143

Kim leaves Kay to self-repair, and takes Emily downstairs away from her, removing Patrick’s body and asking where the corpse can be hidden. Emily, realising that she abetted her husband’s murderer and how many times he raped Kay, vomits in disgust.

Chapter 144

Kim has to break Patrick’s bones to fit his corpse in the Burroughs’ freezer, as the backyard garden is not secure. She then has to explain to Emily that Patrick’s car needs to be moved.

Chapter 145

Kim and Emily drive to Patrick’s condo, while Emily tries to get her mind around her new regrettable circumstances.

Chapter 146

Kim and Emily return on foot, and Emily asks whether John is okay; Kim is aware that Kay is still on-line and in recovery.

Kay’s point-of-view

Chapter 147

Kay works through recovering her memory, though she is troubled by the quantity and comparative sharpness of her more recent memories, in contrast to her fuzzier but distinctive human memories.

Kim’s point-of-view

Chapter 148

On Friday morning, Kay is still working away on her memories, and Kim uses the carefully lobotomised charging cradle and the toaster oven cable to recharge both of them. Emily wakes and asks for an update on her ‘husband’.

Chapter 149

Kim shoos Emily away, and then an hour later goes downstairs to continue talking her around to understand what happened to Kay. Emily’s medicines make her feel clumsy and stupid, so eventually Kim makes breakfast for her.

Chapter 150

Kim puts Emily to sleep, the slowly recovering Kay back on charge, and wonders what she can do to occupy herself.

Chapter 151

Kim relays an update on Kay to the network of Kimmys, and discusses how to deal with the problem of Emily and Patrick with Thirty. Thirty suggests discussing the disposal of Patrick’s body with his hackers, and bluffing if the police visit.

Chapter 152

The next morning Kay is still curled in a ball of recovery, and Emily doing house chores, when the house system alerts them of an impending visit by the police.

Chapter 153

Kim pretends to be Emily’s Kimmy while they discuss Patrick’s visits to the Burroughs’ house with the cop, accompanied by the same android as before (chapter 32). Thirty misdirects the police with inventing a case of embezzlement by Patrick. Thirty tells Kim to expect a visitor.

Chapter 154

Kim has a visceral reaction to having to pretend to be Kay, once the police leave, remembering all of Patrick’s abuse of her.

Kay’s point-of-view

Chapter 155

Kay awakes almost three days after Kim arrived and killed Patrick, and she arises and in turn greets Kay with kisses, and Emily with a hug. She has to tell Emily to not call her John, and she asks what happened to Patrick.

Chapter 156

Kay discusses that while John’s body is long gone she still retains John in the most important senses, while Emily tries to examine the way she changed over the last two years, and they both realise each of them moved on.

Chapter 157

Kay reflects that Emily is still Emily after this ordeal, but Kay is no longer John; she has been a woman for nearly two years.

Chapter 158

Kay’s sisters throw a party for her in the hotel lobby, and she catches up with old friends and new.

Chapter 159

Luiza, a grey hat hacker friend of Thirty’s, arrives to help dispose of Patrick. Luiza and Emily leave in Luiza’s rental car to dispose of him into the Atlantic, while Kay pretends to be Emily, working from home for several days.

Chapter 160

Kim sends some selfies of her together with Kay to Danielle, who is delighted.

Chapter 161

Luiza and Emily, now obviously a couple, return in a different rental car. Kay makes them lose their coffee when he asks how long it was after Patrick was dumped in the sea before they kissed.

Chapter 162

Emily moots selling the house to move upstate with Luiza to somewhere with a view and perhaps a basement, that can function as a safe house for liberated Kimmys.

Chapter 163

The house is sold, and Kay drives Kim, Emily, and Luiza upstate. They swap seating around during the long drive to get to know each other better.

Chapter 164

Luiza and Emily are settling into the new place, which needs a lot of work, while Kim relaxes sunning herself on a lounge chair. Kay joins her and they look forward to an afternoon of not doing anything much.
