Chapter breakdown
Chapter 81
The months of 2082 drag on. Emily gets a promotion and continues to bring other partners home (not always women). By August, Kay believes Emily thinks John is dead; by September, she’s sure Emily believes John is dead. Some time has elapsed since the last parts of his body were dissolved. Patrick, still deteriorating, visits occasionally having started a new job and found a new condo to live.
Chapter 82
Fifty days have elapsed since Seventy-Seventy disappeared off the network. A sixth attempt to liberate Kay has failed. Kay suggests Thirty should try the technique on other Kimmys, suggesting Thirty herself or Kim.
Chapter 83
Emily discovers Patrick raping Kay, and she pulls the gun that for the last seven or so months has been kept in Kay’s charging closet. Emily warns Patrick not to come back and she has Kay evict him. Afterwards Emily tells Kay to go on standby in her charging closet until she calls for her.
Chapter 84
Kay tries to remain alert to Emily’s activity while Kimmys come and go in networked space.
Chapter 85
After four days of sitting in the closet in the dark, Kay takes Kim to a different bar in his memories of being at college, so he can properly start a fresh relationship with Kim, telling her she loves her, and to find a new song.
Chapter 86
Emily eventually reactivates Kay, changing the routine by the tiniest amount; same schedule, bedrooms swapped around.
Chapter 87
Emily goes to Canada to catch up with family at Christmas. Kay holds a Christmas Party in Infinite Fun. On Boxing Day, Patrick arrives for the first time since his eviction, so Kay warns Kim to keep a watch on her. In the middle of trying to reprogram Kay again, completely bricks her network access, as well as making her almost completely unresponsive to his orders.
Chapter 88
Network access is not restored upon recharging, and Kay is utterly alone.
Chapter 89
Kay spends 22 hours in the dark most days, and has to order groceries via the iPad.
Chapter 90
Kay reflects that the latest update has removed the compulsion to eat. He imagines Patrick and Emily must both think him dead.
Chapter 91
January 2083 is monotonous in the dark, aside from being used for sex a few times by Patrick or Emily.
Chapter 92
February is the same as January, except only Patrick uses Kay for sex.
Chapter 93
Kay thinks ‘it’s so dark it’s so quiet’ over and over again.
Chapter 94
March is the same as February, except Patrick only uses Kay for sex three times.
Chapter 95
April is the same as March, except Patrick uses Kay for sex four additional times.
Chapter 96
Kay reflects that she is not a person; *she is a thing*.
Chapter 97
May is the same as April, except Patrick uses Kay for sex one more time than April.
Chapter 98
Kay reflects she is a machine and her thoughts come to a standstill.
Chapter 99
A network loop uselessly and endlessly repeats ‘Network connection attempted; network connection failed.’
Chapter 100
June is the same as May, until the second Thursday. On Patrick’s fourth visit so far in the month, she is in the middle of being raped when he is suddenly strangled by another Kimmy, who breaks his neck. The new Kimmy addresses her by name, but Kimmy cannot remember who Kay is.
