Edit Request for wiki CSS

Hello, I've created an edit request on MediaWiki Talk:Common.css to add support for styling for hatnotes (i.e. Template:Hatnote and children). I'm also leaving a notice here in case you don't notice the talk page there.

Alternatively, if you can give me administrative rights on the wiki. For my credentials, I am an administrator on both the HyperRogue Wiki (MediaWiki) and SCP Wiki (Wikidot), and I'm happy to accept questions or concerns about my experience and views.

Thanks. aismallard (talk) 21:10, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Fiddling with Template:Chapter info

Hi Becca!

I’m fiddling around with a template to automatically categorise points-of-view; for example, Category:Chapters with POV by Bethany has just been populated by adding {{POV|Bethany}} to the Chapter info box on the new page for Chapter 43 (I’m working backwards, perhaps appropriately from the Antipodes).

It’s been years since I’ve fiddled with Mediawiki and I’m not seeing why the info box is removing spaces, with the effect that line wrapping isn’t happening; any ideas on how to fix this? (Otherwise the info box will get very wide when I get to the chapters with 13 or more different viewpoints!)

Cheers! Cathy / Ξανθὴ (idle chitchat) 22:57, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

Nicely done — should have thought of that one myself. Cathy / Ξανθὴ (idle chitchat) 05:51, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

“Elle of the wiki”

Tee hee.

I’ll put Book 3 chapters up tomorrow, probably. The quality and duration of my sleep seems to be in the hands of random number generators presently. Cathy / Ξανθὴ (idle chitchat) 06:16, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

Change to Template:Programme subject and Form: Programme subject

Hi Becca, would it be possible to add an optional Boolean field to the end of the template for programme subjects, for whether the Dorley girl is a point-of-view character or not?

The various book chapter pages have all had the POV links to categories established, which generally look like Category:Chapters with POV by Steph, so all that needs to happen where the Boolean value is true, is to add a link at the bottom of the info box below the First appearance line that would look something like [[:Category:Chapters with POV by PAGENAME|List of chapters with PAGENAMEE’s point-of-view]]. I wasn’t keen to do this given that knowing what I’m like, I’d probably break it for several hours before working out what the hell I’d gotten wrong. — Cheers, Cathy / Ξανθὴ (idle chitchat) 00:12, 13 April 2025 (UTC)

On the frequency of names

Hi Becca,

I noticed the change to the POV template in Chapter 1 and was hoping to head you off at the pass. All ~40 chapters had the POV template marked for Steph, rather than Stephanie, on account that Steph is the most frequently used variant of her name by a substantial margin, followed by Stef, Stefan, and Stephanie a distant last of the four main variants (there’s also Steffie and Stephanie etc.) I think Steph’s page would be better at Steph rather than Stephanie but it’s no great issue if you disagree; the Category page can simply redirect rather than going to the trouble of editing 40 or more chapter pages.

For technical reasons, the name you use with the POV template will have to match the name used for the page. I'm happy to rename Stephanie to Steph; we do typically use nicknames for page names. –Becca Dax (talk) 21:10, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
Many thanks, I think I was in the middle of putting in the redirect I suggested before when I noticed you’d started preparing to move Steph’s page! I still don’t have the Neem Tree copy of volume 1 (it is difficult to get supply out here in the colonies), and now that I think about it, the other characters with name variation issues like Tabitha’s are Aunt Bea < Beatrice; Pamela < Ella (this latter one is very inconvenient considering you also have the inherent confusion with Elle and also Ellie). — Cathy / Ξανθὴ (idle chitchat) 21:24, 13 April 2025 (UTC)

The other name I would have situated differently in the wiki is Tabby rather than Tabitha, as the former outnumbers the latter by about two to one. — Cathy / Ξανθὴ (idle chitchat) 20:48, 13 April 2025 (UTC)

As noted on Tabitha, the name "Tabby" is no longer being used in new chapters and is actively being retconned in the Neem Tree Press editions, so I'd prefer to leave that one as is. –Becca Dax (talk) 21:10, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
