In the Dorley Hall programme, a pre-transition associate is anyone with whom the girl in question is known to have had a close relationship before intake.

Even after they graduate, Dorley girls are forbidden to contact pre-transition associates—they represent both a risk of backsliding and a risk of breaching the programme's secrecy. Exceptions to this rule are not often granted; the Hall allowed Indira to reconnect with her family as an experiment.

Girls in the programme can access their file entries and make notes to update information on pre-transition associates.[ch. 23] Sponsors and other volunteer staff can also make updates.
