Disclosure

In the context of the Dorley Hall programme, disclosure refers to two related but distinct events:

Programme subjects

For programme subjects, disclosure is a loosely-scheduled event early in the first year when sponsors reveal to the boys in the basement that graduation from the programme will require them to become women, and that this process has already begun. The timing of first disclosure is determined in response to the boys' progress -- by two or three months in the basement, some of the boys generally will have begun discovering and discussing effects of estrogen that cannot be easily explained (i.e. breast development) and eventually either suspecting or outright apprehending the true purpose of their "vitamin shots" and goserelin implants. At this point, the sponsors are convened and disclosure is administered to the entire basement as a group, if possible.

This first disclosure is a half-truth, presented to the boys as being the initial trial of a new rehabilitative experiment (rather than a long-running, established procedure) in order to prevent the boys from realizing that their sponsors have also been through the programme, thus forcing them to establish bonds between each other. [SD 19]

Months later, a second, full disclosure happens for each programme subject separately, usually after a subject has established a certain level of trust and rapport with their sponsor and conveyed an earnest intent to comply with the programme -- Pippa explains that full disclosure is administered when each subject "is at their lowest". [SD 19] This final disclosure reveals the true nature of the Hall, specifically that all sponsors and Dorley girls also went through the programme. This reveal is intended to give the basementee "proof that future, family and friends all await, if only they can push through." [SD 19]

Outsiders

Disclosure also refers to the process whereby an unaffiliated person is made aware of the true nature of the programme; this is typically administered only when absolutely necessary. This process generally involves the person being "read in" by first reading and signing a strict non-disclosure agreement swearing them to secrecy and threatening them with dire consequences should the terms of the agreement be broken -- an arrangement guaranteeing mutually assured destruction for both the Hall and anyone who would expose their activity to the outside world. After signing the NDA, the programme is explained to the individual by a representative of the Hall; this process often necessitates a Dorley girl revealing her full personal history to the person being read in. [SD 25]

Individuals read in to the programme are each handled on a case-by-case basis but can, at the Hall's discretion, be permitted access to the Hall and its resources on par with that of a Dorley graduate.
