Chapter 49: John Doe is the second chapter of the fifth book of the series, and forty-ninth chapter overall. The title refers to an anonymous corpse Haley obtains to leave in the Smyth-Farrow safe house, to be discovered in the burnt-out ruins.

The chapter opens with 3 flashback scenes to Saturday, 17 August 2017, before returning to the remainding fourteen scenes in the present on Sunday 2 February 2020.

Plot

At a summer party, Raph makes a video for his social media with his girlfriend Ange

Raph tells Ange to just watch the movie when she has something to tell him

Ange is pregnant, and Raph convinces her to have an abortion

• Sunday 2 February 2020

Jane goes exercising with Tabitha and company, almost loses her breakfast in the lake

Steph wakes up from a nightmare in her parents home and sends Beth a selfie

Jane tries to destress with a shower after exercise

Christine is woken by Indira, as preparations for the Rileys’ visit need to begin

Cora and Haley prepare to torch Alistair’s safe house with a suitable corpse John Doe in place of Smyth-Farrow

Jane and the other sponsors learn the orchis need to be moved a month forward to mid-February

Steph and Bethany share a video call as she gets dressed up

Cora and Haley ship Alistair off to the UK as freight

Jane finds Raph in the upper basement gym, and starts fixing his eyebrow problem

Indira makes a friend in Petra, and then gets ready to charm Steph’s parents

Jane debriefs in the security room receiving a massage from Tabitha

Cora looks forward to meeting Tabitha again on the flight back to the UK

Steph survives dinner, and Petra sees a picture of Bethany on her phone

Raph learns from Jane that his girlfriend took her life just before his abduction
