Chapter 32: Endless Ascent is the sixth chapter of the third book of the series, Enemies of Dorley Hall, and thirty-second chapter overall.
The chapter contains a flashback scene to 2018, and the remaining 21 scenes all take place on Wednesday, 25 December 2019.
Plot
- Returning to the basement Steph and the inmate-formerly-known-as-Aaron get waylaid by a very drunk Jane
- Melissa resolves to bury the scalpel with Nell, Autumn, and Tash
- Not-Aaron and Steph are seen by Adam returning to Steph’s bedroom
- Not-Aaron toys around with a name that he can’t say out loud while undressing
- Val and Frances discuss the impending arrival of Smyth-Farrow’s children
- Steph and not-Aaron have breakfast with Adam, who knows they both attended the upstairs party
- Melissa and Shahida visit Shahida’s mum and stepfather
- Christine starts a group chat to avoid cleanup duties
- Melissa has some déjà-vu revisiting Shahida’s parents’ home
- Dorothy wants an accounting of Frankie’s time, and Declan and Trevor are to be made up to meet the Smyth-Farrows
- Will has a minor meltdown and Christine takes Steph and not-Aaron away for coffee
- Melissa and Shahida walk to Amy Woodley’s place, who slams the door upon seeing Melissa
- Jake shows off Dina Shaw to Val
- Christine and Steph notice not-Aaron is living in his head trying to process everything
- In a flashback to March 2018, the boy who has yet to become Christine relives his experiences coming to terms with his new sense of self
- Not-Aaron asks to talk with Maria after an influx of second-years
- Amy catches up with Melissa and Shy
- Amy drops a truth bombshell on Melissa and Shy
- Maria hears and delightedly approves of not-Aaron’s new names
- Melissa and Shy realise they do both want the same thing, to Amy’s delight
- Bethany Erin tells Steph his new names
- Christmas lunch for nine at Stenordale
